Sunny Saturday

21 Apr

I had a rare Saturday off and it was so sunny outside so a friend and I took advantage of the outdoor patio at Scarlett Begonia. I had the shrimp and grits which were served with poached eggs. Ever since my trip to New Orleans, I have had a craving for shrimp and grits so this was the perfect fix.

Coulis

5 Apr

Huevos Rancheros is one of my favorite breakfast items. So, when I saw it on the menu at Coulis in New Orleans, I couldn’t resist. Served with pepper jack cheese, corn tortillas, black beans, eggs over easy, creole sauce and sour cream this was the perfect way to start the day.

Fat Hen Grocery

4 Apr

One of the things I enjoyed about New Orleans was the availability of grits wherever we went. We tried a place called Fat Hen Grocery where I ordered the Eggs Creole. It consisted of three poached eggs in a creole tomato sauce, served over cheesy grits. I loved the combination of the creole sauce and the grits. If you do go here, expect to smell like barbeque for the rest of the day!

Seal Sanctuary and Brunch

21 Mar

I didn’t have to work today and it is so beautiful out so we decided to go for a walk to the Seal Sanctuary with our pup. Once we got there, we took turns looking at the seals since dogs aren’t allowed within sight of the sanctuary. This is one of those special spots in the Santa Barbara area.

This time of year, it is a protected birthing habitat for the seals. We could see the young seals playing around with the older seals. If you time it right and come in January and February, you might get to see them being born! After we finished our walk, we had worked up an appetite. On the way home, we stopped at the Summerland Beach Cafe since they had a huge sign saying that they were dog friendly. When we sat down, our dog was given a water bowl and a dog biscuit. I ordered the Rigoberto’s Rancheros with my eggs over easy.

The potatoes were made with onions which I always like. My only thought was that the cheese could have been a bit more melted but overall, it was a very satisfying dish.

Breakfast at Four Seasons Westlake Village

17 Mar

Growing up, one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast was bagels with lox. So when I saw that there was a smoked salmon platter on the breakfast menu at Four Seasons Westlake Village, I got excited. I asked if they had gluten-free bread, and since it was a Four Seasons, of course the answer was, “yes”.

Recipes Bakery

11 Mar

Yesterday, I met up with a friend to explore the wonderful Saturday Farmer’s Market in Santa Barbara (where I got the most amazing cranberry and walnut goat cheese). As we were getting ready to leave, we saw the cutesy Recipes Bakery building across the street and decided to go in to see what they were all about. As we were both excitedly noticing the “GF” label on the menu, one of the staff members mentioned that they can make all of the items shown above gluten-free except for the banana bread. Even the pancakes? Yes indeed. So I ordered the GF pancakes and my friend ordered the egg scramble with a GF muffin substituted for the toast. Here comes the weird part. As we were waiting for our food we scouted the area to find where we would be eating our breakfast. It turns out they aren’t really set up as a restaurant. Therefore, there really isn’t a seating area set up. This is also why were served our dishes in to-go containers. We both felt this was odd since they had breakfast menu items on the menu, and not just baked goods. We got over that pretty quick once we started eating.

These had lots of chunks of fresh pineapple dispersed within the pancakes. I found them to be really flavorful. The vanilla infused cream complimented them perfectly.

I had a bite of my friend’s GF muffin and it was good, but I was still happy with my choice of the pancakes. If you are looking for breakfast to go, this is your spot!

Renaud’s Patisserie and Bistro

24 Jan

This morning, we decided to try Renaud’s Patisserie and Bistro in the Arlington Plaza. I ordered the omelette with peppers, spinach and gruyere cheese and made with egg whites. For my side, I chose the potatoes. I really loved this meal. The omelette was the perfect size and had the perfect amount of fillings. The potatoes were incredibly good as well. The outdoor seating of this bistro is really appealing as it is in a quieter shopping center that has many cute stores. I definitely want to return to try some of their macarons!

Crushcakes Cafe

14 Jan

We had a big day of looking at houses today so it was imperative that I have a hearty breakfast to start the day off right. We decided to try Crushcakes Cafe. I had the scramble with salsa, cheddar, jack and sliced avocado. Since I couldn’t have the bread that it is usually served with, they gave me corn tortillas. These were perfect to make mini breakfast tacos with.

Friday Morning Brunch

13 Jan

I had the day off today so I was able to get brunch, my favorite meal of the day. We went to Scarlett Begonia in Victoria Court. I had the polenta with two poached eggs, cippolini onions, artichokes (that are normally fried but were sauteed to be GF) and prosciutto. I have to admit… it was a weird combination of ingredients. However, I found it to be quite satisfying. My favorite part of the meal though was the homemade GF chocolate toffee we got with the check. Yum.

Table for One at Tupelo Junction

29 Dec

I had just enough time before work to get breakfast this morning so I decided to go to Tupelo Junction. They always have a stack of the Santa Barbara Independent out front which was perfect reading material as I was dining alone today. I ordered the smoked bacon, spinach, caramelized onion, tomato and gouda scramble. It was quite good. It comes with their potatoes which are always the perfect consistency. Yum.
