Lunch at Sojourner Cafe

6 Feb

If you are like me, you sometimes look at restaurant websites to see what their specials are for the day. That is what I was doing this morning when I saw “hearty vegetable soup” on Sojourner Cafe’s menu and knew that that was what I must consume for lunch. I started with a cup of this GF hearty soup which was perfect on an overcast day like today. Then I had the garlicky caesar salad without croutons.

I wasn’t planning on getting dessert, but then our waitress informed me that they had a gluten-free brownie bite. Of course I had to get it so that you could see a picture of it.

This was the perfect amount of richness. What a perfect lunch for a rare day off from work!

Silvergreens To Go

28 Dec

Ok. I know that doesn’t look very appetizing. This was what my potato cheddar soup from Silvergreens looked like after driving it home. However, after mixing it up a bit, it looked a bit better and was quite delicious. I also got the Thai Chicken Pasta with GF pasta and grilled chicken.

This was very yummy. I was afraid that the sauce might be a bit heavy, but I found that it was on the lighter side and full of flavor.

Blue Boar Restaurant

13 Dec

The Blue Boar Restaurant is located in the Blue Boar Inn in Midway. You have to see this place. It has a charming, old European feel to it in a sort of romantic way. The room is furnished with antiques from all over the world. Our waitress even brought me a printed sheet detailing where all of the items came from. Now on to the food. I started with the French Onion Grantinee which they prepared for me without the bread. I love french onion soup and this was no exception. I then had the Blue Boar Salad which the waitress recommended. This consisted of mixed greens, tomatoes and manchego cheese with a white balsamic vinaigrette. I thought it was the perfect amount of dressing and the big shreds of cheese on top certainly were appreciated. For my main, I had the Butternut Squash Risotto.

In it was radicchio, asparagus, manchego cheese and truffle oil. It was very good and it would have been the perfect end to my very filling meal. But then when the waitress was saying that their Creme Brulee was voted best in the state, I decided to continue eating. It was pretty straightforward as far as Creme Brulees go. There were no big surprises, but it was VERY good. The only problem was that I managed to eat so much at dinner that I felt a bit ill at the end of the night. I definitely want to return and eat a more appropriate amount.

Tree Room at Sundance Resort

13 Dec

One of the days we were in Utah, we skied at Sundance Resort which is close to the home we were staying at. During the day, my husband and I had Kind Bars for lunch. When it was time for dinner, we were hungry. We went to the Tree Room at Sundance. First, there was an amuse bouche that was served. Since they couldn’t verify if it was GF, they gave me strawberries with balsamic that were good. I then had the special soup which was a corn soup with some chives and other tasty ingredients that I don’t remember.

This was particularly good, especially since we had been out in the cold all day. For my main dish, I had the duck. To be honest, I don’t think I have ever ordered duck before in my life. I just saw that it was served with risotto which sounded really appealing that night.

This was served with butternut squash, pecan risotto, brussels sprouts, cranberry and a molasses glaze. Consider me a duck fan.

Your Place

14 Nov

More often than not, we crave Thai food. We are very loyal to our favorite Thai restaurant, Your Place, located on Milpas Street. Tonight, I started with the Tom Kah soup. This sweet and spicy soup was great since it was a cold night. I then got the Pad Thai as a main course after I verified that they do not use soy sauce in their Pad Thai dish.

This had tons of cilantro on top which was very much appreciated. I think that one day when I have the time and energy, I want to grow my own cilantro so that I can just throw it on everything that I consume.

Fresco Take-Out

9 Nov

The hubs had a work call tonight so we decided to get some take-out from Fresco. I called to see if their soup of the day was GF and it was!  Soup and salad sounded mighty fine to me, so I got the caesar salad and the potato leak soup. The salad was smothered with cheese which is just the way I like it. The soup looked pretty unappetizing as depicted below.

However, I love potato and leek soup and this was no exception. It was the perfect thing for a cold night!

Intermezzo

3 Nov

With the lighting, that doesn’t look too appetizing. But the smoked ham, lentil and red wine braised chard soup I started with at Intermezzo had a lot of flavor. I wasn’t looking to eat too much tonight so I just got some soup and vegetables. The market vegetables were fresh and perfectly dressed with some balsamic.

Now both of these items were great. But what I really wanted was the truffled parmesan french fries. Unfortunately, they are not made in a dedicated fryer. However, the husband enjoyed them immensely.

After eating, we went next door to the Au Bon Climat tasting room. This is one of my favorite pinots from this area, so I am very excited that they finally opened their own tasting room!

In other news, there appears to be a large hole on the butt of my jeans that was discovered while out tonight. Apparently this blog is not good for my waistline.

Plow and Angel

2 Nov

This evening, we went to Plow and Angel at the San Ysidro Ranch. Plow and Angel is the more casual dining option at San Ysidro Ranch. They also have Stonehouse which is more upscale. Both eateries have outdoor patios that are the most romantic, magical setting you can ever imagine. Seriously. If you have a special occasion that is worth celebrating, sit outside and just be in awe.

On to the food…. the first thing you will notice on the Plow and Angel menu is that it says on the bottom, “We are happy to accommodate all dietary needs such as vegetarian and gluten free diets.” It is true. They are very knowledgeable about the GF diet and even have gluten-free pasta available to substitute in on any dish with pasta. Another thing worth mentioning? If you dine at Plow and Angel, you can also order any dish from the Stonehouse menu. I started with “SYR’s Famous Tortilla Soup”. It includes avocado, grilled chicken, cheddar cheese, and corn tortilla crisps. This soup was SO good. I already am thinking about going back just to get this soup again. Then, for my main, I got the Maine Lobster Bolognese with GF penne all Chitarra, tomatoes and basil.

Now this dish comes at a price ($69.00), but it was delicious. There was plenty of lobster meat and the bolognese style sauce complimented the dish perfectly. If you are on a budget, just ordering the soup and a salad would be satisfying and enjoyable as the setting outside is just that special.

Alchemy Arts Cafe

17 Oct

I decided to try out Alchemy Arts Cafe for lunch today since places that focus on health tend to be gluten-free friendly. After looking over the menu, I asked the waiter which items were GF. He wasn’t sure so he went to the kitchen to check. Moments later, he returned to inform me that EVERYTHING on the lunch menu was gluten-free. I tried to conceal my sheer joy at being able to order anything on the menu. After much perusing, I finally decided on the Cabbage Wraps and the Pumpkin Soup with Dandelion. The wraps were light and refreshing. These by themselves would be plenty for a light lunch.

The pumpkin soup was very good. It was very hearty though and I found myself struggling to finish both items. The one thing I would say is that I wasn’t too crazy about the taste of the dandelion. I know that it is supposed to be very healthy and cleansing for the body, but I just wasn’t a huge fan. Luckily for me, it was very easy to avoid the dandelion and enjoy the soup. Overall, I found the cafe to be the perfect place to have lunch while I immersed myself in a book.

Sojourner Cafe

20 Sep

While perusing the menu at Sojourner Cafe at lunch, I saw that they had gluten-free pasta available on one of their items of the day! It really seems like local places are starting to cater more to those with the GF diet which makes me very happy. I ended up having the coconut curry butternut squash soup along with a caesar salad without croutons. I will definitely keep an eye on the special menu though in case another GF pasta shows up!

I also have to give a little shout out to one of my favorite people in Santa Barbara who just happens to also have Celiac Disease. She and her husband just had their first baby this morning. Congratulations!
