In-N-Out

20 Jan

Sometimes you just want to eat a burger and fries. When that craving hits (like it did today), we run to In-N-Out where I can get my burger protein style, and my husband can have the grilled cheese. The fact that they make their fries in a dedicated fryer just makes it that much better.

On another topic, a couple of nights ago we went to Pizza Guru. You may recall that last time we were there, the person that helped us told us that we could have the bread sticks made GF. Well, the people we spoke to this time around said that is not true. Has anyone ever been able to order the bread sticks there?

Also, I called C’est Cheese which is a wonderful local cheese shop in downtown Santa Barbara. They have some very appealing sounding sandwiches on their menu so I figured I would ask if they have GF bread. WELL… the lady I spoke with on the phone had just started to look into providing GF bread! It will be a while until they actually have it, but I just think that is so exciting!

Woodstock’s Pizza

13 Nov

This weekend I had my lacrosse alumni game at UCSB. It is a tradition to go to Giovanni’s in Isla Vista after the game for some pizza and pitchers of beer. Now I couldn’t drink the beer due to it being gluten-filled and the fact that I was one of the drivers. However, I knew that Woodstock’s Pizza nearby has gluten-free pizza available now. I decided to call and see if they could deliver one of their GF pizzas to Giovanni’s. The guy on the phone had to make sure it was ok with his manager, which it was. About twenty minutes later, I met the delivery guy outside and got the delicious looking pizza shown above. This was a larger GF pizza. The sauce on the pizza was really good. I really liked this pizza since it wasn’t trying to be gourmet. It was just good sauce and good cheese on a decent crust. I ended up having plenty as leftovers, so this would be a good pie to get for sharing.

On a side note, congratulations to my fellow Gaucho lacrosse alumni who beat the current school team 8-7.

Simply Pies

25 Oct

After running some errands today, I stopped at Simply Pies to see what gluten-free things were available. In the case, there was a vegetable quiche and chocolate cream pie that looked too good to pass up. I cut a sliver from the quiche and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds. YUM. The crust was flaky and had a good taste. I don’t even know if I had ever had quiche before but it seems to be a nice way to add a little variety to your breakfast. And then there was the chocolate cream pie…

Oh my goodness… this pie is so good. The whipped cream dollops on top were the perfect accompaniment to the chocolate. This little place on Hollister was so cute. I guess you can order any of their pies, quiches or pot pies to be made GF at least 24 hours in advance. The apple pie looked so incredibly good (with gluten) that I think I will have to try it GF. And pot pies?! How cool is that?!

Natural Cafe – Goleta

25 Oct

After stopping at Alpha Thrift Store in Goleta to pick up items for our Halloween costumes, my husband and I decided to go to Natural Cafe which we have always liked. We started with the hummus appetizer with the pita placed on a separate plate. For some reason, the hummus tasted a little like tuna fish to both of us which was a turn off. We have had it downtown before and enjoyed it, so maybe it was this particular batch. I ordered the Natural Caesar Salad without the croutons (I forgot to take a picture). It was really tasty. A quick note though… the tahini dressing which I used to eat years ago apparently has soy sauce in it so avoid this dressing if you are going the salad route.

Jungle George Grill

11 Oct

Three years ago, my husband and I used to go to Dish Cafe on Calle Real a bunch. Since then, it has become Jungle George Grill. The exciting thing? They still have the sandwiches which are made with plantains and are GF! Woohoo! I got the vegetable plantain sandwich without the tabbouleh. It comes with corn chips and salsa. I also got a side salad without croutons. There must have been a little communication error because it came with croutons, but that was easily remedied by the staff.

Future Restaurant Posts

23 Sep

Even though I have only been back for a week, I am amazed at how far Santa Barbara has come. For those of you that are just visiting the area and would like more options for your stay here, below are restaurants that I know to be GF friendly but that I have not posted anything about yet. Many of them I have been to and have experienced no problems. Others are on my list of places to try. As always, know that you are eating at your own risk and speak with the staff to avoid any cross contamination issues.

Olio e limone (pasta) – I have had many fantastic meals here prior to them offering GF pasta. This is a great place to go for a special meal. Posted!

Ca Dario (pasta) – The last time I lived in Santa Barbara, I know they would cook your GF pasta if you brought it, but word is that they have their own stock now. Posted!

Pascucci (pasta) – This is a good option to go to if you are shopping downtown. Posted!

Bucatini (pasta) – I only had one meal here a very long time ago and didn’t love my experience, but they are owned by the same guy as Tre Lune and Luckys. I will definitely be giving it another chance now that they are carrying GF pasta.

Aldo’s (pasta) – This place seems to cater to more of the tourists, but they need to eat GF too! I ate here once many years ago and it was kind of mediocre, but I will try it again to taste some GF pasta.

Pastavino (pasta) – I just saw online that this place offers GF pasta. They are owned by the same people as Holdren’s.

Palazzio (pasta) – This is the place to go if you are hungry as their portions are HUGE. I haven’t tried this GF pasta yet, but I used to get salmon here and it was nicely prepared. Posted!

Adama – This is an entirely vegan restaurant that has GF items clearly marked on the menu online. Posted!

Le Crepe Shoppe – I read that they offer crepes that are made entirely of buckwheat flour. I haven’t been yet though to check out any cross contamination concerns. Posted!

Taffy’s Pizza (pizza) – Saw that they have GF pizza. Plan to go there soon!

Pizza Mizza (pizza) – Never been, but will definitely be visiting since they have GF pizza! Posted!

Pizza Guru (pizza) – Posted!

Woodstocks Pizza (pizza) – It would have been nice to have a GF pizza option in Isla Vista while I was still at UCSB! Posted!

Spiritland Bistro – We have been here a few times. It is fantastic for people that eat GF, vegetarian, or just want a tasty meal.

Simply Pies – I am not a huge pastry/dessert kind of girl, but this just sounds too good to pass up. Can’t wait to try a GF pie! Posted!
Honey B. Bakeshop (entirely GF bakery) – I am not a sweets girl, but look at the pictures on this website. This place might change me.
