Jungle George Grill

11 Oct

Three years ago, my husband and I used to go to Dish Cafe on Calle Real a bunch. Since then, it has become Jungle George Grill. The exciting thing? They still have the sandwiches which are made with plantains and are GF! Woohoo! I got the vegetable plantain sandwich without the tabbouleh. It comes with corn chips and salsa. I also got a side salad without croutons. There must have been a little communication error because it came with croutons, but that was easily remedied by the staff.

Following on from your Paris reviews would you mind me sharing this suggestion as well please?

Hi, I actually went to Jungle George’s and inquired about the deep fryer that these plantains are fried in. The restaurant owner confirmed that they do deep fry the onion rings (which are breaded) in the same fryer. Since gluten does not denature until above 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and these fryers are kept at temperatures below 400 degrees Fahrenheit, the plantains here are *not* gluten free. If you have Celiac disease as I do, this is something to watch out for at all restaurants. Here is an article that gives a good explanation if you’d like to read more:

      Hi Kristen!

This just goes to show how frustrating it can be dining out sometimes! Depending on who you ask at any particular establishment, you may get a different answer! I had been told on numerous occasions that the plantains were fried in separate oil from other items on their menu! My hope is that with time, restaurants take more initiative in educating their staff so that any employee can correctly answer questions directed to them! Thanks for the link to the article!
