Domenica

6 Apr

For our last night in New Orleans, we had an early dinner at Domenica before the game. We started with the roasted cauliflower which was served with whipped goat feta. This was fantastic. I would love to try to recreate this dish one day. We also shared the affettati misti which was a selection of meats, cheeses, olives and roasted vegetables.

For my main dish, I ordered the white truffle risotto with pancetta. I also added in some grilled shrimp for some extra protein.

This was very satisfying. It was the perfect warm dish to eat prior to heading out in the torrential rains to get to the Superdome. Domenica was a great place for food, ambiance and celebrity sightings!

Opal

25 Mar

We went to Opal last night with some friends. I started with the special soup which was a  Creamed Potato and Spinach Soup. Luckily for me, there was no flour in it. I then ordered the Salmon Filet with a Thai Curry Sauce. Usually, they drizzle a hoisin sauce on top but since that has soy sauce, they omitted it.

This was incredibly delicious. I loved the julienned vegetables that were served with it. Although our waitress wasn’t entirely sure as to what was GF or not, she was in close contact with the kitchen and they were incredibly knowledgeable.

Downey’s

20 Mar

Tonight we went to Downey’s, which is consistently rated one of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara. I was interested to see how gluten-free friendly they were. Our waiter was really good, running down the menu and letting me know what was safe and what to avoid. I started with the mussels. They were prepared with a bit of curry and served on lentils. Then I had the steak prepared with grilled asparagus and pureed potatoes.

This was very good. After this course they brought out a cheese platter that we could choose from. I asked if we could have a plate made without the stilton since blue cheeses typically start their mold from bread. When they served the cheese though, it was on a plate with bread and crackers. I thought that they would have remembered that I could not have bread and crackers near my food. I ended up just eating the ends of the cheeses that were furthest from the gluten. Overall the two dishes I had were wonderful, but I was disappointed that at that stage of the meal, there was such a careless mistake.

Julienne

18 Feb

Last night my parents and I decided to try Julienne since we have been hearing good things about it. I started with their special cauliflower soup which had little bits of the most flavorful purple cauliflower in the center of it. I then had their caesar salad without the croutons.

It had a garlic anchovy dressing that was quite wonderful and was topped off with lots of grated cheese. For my main dish, I had the steamed halibut with crispy red lentils and a cabbage puree.

The crispy lentils that went with this were so unbelievably tasty. I could eat a whole bowl of them. I wasn’t going to order dessert but then I saw that they had a homemade ice cream that night that was York Peppermint Patties ice cream. Our waitress assured me that it was GF and so I made the very good decision of ordering it.

This tasted like a great mint ice cream with the bonus of getting little chunks of the peppermint patties. This entire meal was just so fantastic. Our waitress was very well informed as to what I could and could not have. Another perk of dining here is that they have embraced the farm to fork mentality, supporting our local Santa Barbara businesses. We will definitely be returning sooner than later to get more of this gem!

Arch Rock Fish

14 Jan

We worked up quite an appetite looking at overpriced real estate in Santa Barbara. It was time for a break so we went to Arch Rock Fish for a late lunch. I started with the grilled artichoke which was very good. The other people at the table had ordered guacamole and chips as a starter but I didn’t share since the chips were fried in contaminated oil. I then had the grilled fish tacos (I know my orders are starting to get a bit predictable).

These were served with corn tortillas and a nice side of pico. The guacamole and cilantro on top made me very happy. I really liked the feel of the restaurant. The only thing I might change is the napkins. After our meal, we all had tons of lint leftover on our pants.

Gooey Goodness

19 Oct

I don’t cook often, but if one of us is feeling sick or it is the first night of Chrismukkah, I make gooey goodness. My husband wasn’t feeling well today, so I stopped at the store on my way home from work to pick up the three ingredients: GF spaghetti, Amy’s Spicy Vegetarian Chili, and a mexican blend of shredded cheeses. How do you make it? Cook the pasta as directed, then top with the warmed chili and then smother with some shredded cheese. The best part about this meal (other than the fact that it is easy enough for me to make) is that it makes a really satisfying smushing noise when you mix it all together in your bowl. So there you have it… a gluten-free recipe from the girl that doesn’t cook.
