Killer B’s BBQ and Bar

9 Apr

While giving my talk at Whole Foods, one of the attendees mentioned that Killer B’s on State Street is gluten-free friendly. Apparently, the owner’s wife has to eat GF. We decided to try it tonight. Our waitress didn’t know what was and wasn’t GF, but she called over another waitress that did. Apparently all of the sauces they have are gluten-free. I ended up getting the sliced BBQ beef brisket plate. You get the choice of two sides, so I chose the corn on the cob and the baked beans. Their fries looked tasty but they are not made in a dedicated fryer.

Domenica

6 Apr

For our last night in New Orleans, we had an early dinner at Domenica before the game. We started with the roasted cauliflower which was served with whipped goat feta. This was fantastic. I would love to try to recreate this dish one day. We also shared the affettati misti which was a selection of meats, cheeses, olives and roasted vegetables.

For my main dish, I ordered the white truffle risotto with pancetta. I also added in some grilled shrimp for some extra protein.

This was very satisfying. It was the perfect warm dish to eat prior to heading out in the torrential rains to get to the Superdome. Domenica was a great place for food, ambiance and celebrity sightings!

Coulis

5 Apr

Huevos Rancheros is one of my favorite breakfast items. So, when I saw it on the menu at Coulis in New Orleans, I couldn’t resist. Served with pepper jack cheese, corn tortillas, black beans, eggs over easy, creole sauce and sour cream this was the perfect way to start the day.

Velvet Cactus

5 Apr

Mexican food is typically easy for those on a GF diet, so we tried out Velvet Cactus while we were in New Orleans. This restaurant had a really appealing ambiance with cool artwork all over the place. Lo and behold, they had a written GF menu on the wall near their kitchen! Unfortunately, their chips are fried in contaminated oil so those were off limits. My celiac brother and I shared the Island Jerk Skewers to start.

There were incredibly tender and served with a honey lime sour cream that was quite good. For my main dish, I ordered the shrimp burrito “naked style”. This basically meant I got the fillings of a burrito in a bowl.

It consisted of grilled shrimp, pico de gallo, roasted corn, black beans, green onion, cabbage and rice. I ordered some corn tortillas on the side so that I could make tacos out of the dish. This was both filling and tasty.

Fat Hen Grocery

4 Apr

One of the things I enjoyed about New Orleans was the availability of grits wherever we went. We tried a place called Fat Hen Grocery where I ordered the Eggs Creole. It consisted of three poached eggs in a creole tomato sauce, served over cheesy grits. I loved the combination of the creole sauce and the grits. If you do go here, expect to smell like barbeque for the rest of the day!

Theo’s

4 Apr

I was in New Orleans this past weekend for the Final Four so I was able to see how gluten-free the area was. We had a great meal at a place called Theo’s which is located on the really appealing Magazine Street. They have gluten-free pizza available and take all of the necessary precautions to make sure it stays GF. My brother that has celiac was there as well which meant I had someone to split two pizzas with! I ordered Doc’s Margarita. He ordered the Big Dave’s Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

They were both good, however I would probably add garlic to mine next time to give it more bite. This was a great find in New Orleans!

Chilaquiles

26 Mar

We only had time for a quick dinner tonight, so we ran over to La Super Rica. Lucky for us, the Chilaquiles were on the specials menu for the day. This is one of my three favorite things there, including #6 and #13. Yum.

Opal

25 Mar

We went to Opal last night with some friends. I started with the special soup which was a  Creamed Potato and Spinach Soup. Luckily for me, there was no flour in it. I then ordered the Salmon Filet with a Thai Curry Sauce. Usually, they drizzle a hoisin sauce on top but since that has soy sauce, they omitted it.

This was incredibly delicious. I loved the julienned vegetables that were served with it. Although our waitress wasn’t entirely sure as to what was GF or not, she was in close contact with the kitchen and they were incredibly knowledgeable.

Silvergreen’s GF Menu

21 Mar

Silvergreens just made it a whole lot easier to order if you have to eat on a gluten-free diet. When we went tonight, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the menu above. I ended up getting a half sandwich with a cup of soup. The Tillamook Grilled Chicken sandwich was wrapped in lettuce and included grilled chicken, Tillamook cheddar, tomatoes, red onions and mayo. I chose the potato cheddar for my soup. Potatoes and cheese are always a fantastic combination. It is just so nice to be able to go to a restaurant that has been proactive in accommodating the gluten-free diet!

Seal Sanctuary and Brunch

21 Mar

I didn’t have to work today and it is so beautiful out so we decided to go for a walk to the Seal Sanctuary with our pup. Once we got there, we took turns looking at the seals since dogs aren’t allowed within sight of the sanctuary. This is one of those special spots in the Santa Barbara area.

This time of year, it is a protected birthing habitat for the seals. We could see the young seals playing around with the older seals. If you time it right and come in January and February, you might get to see them being born! After we finished our walk, we had worked up an appetite. On the way home, we stopped at the Summerland Beach Cafe since they had a huge sign saying that they were dog friendly. When we sat down, our dog was given a water bowl and a dog biscuit. I ordered the Rigoberto’s Rancheros with my eggs over easy.

The potatoes were made with onions which I always like. My only thought was that the cheese could have been a bit more melted but overall, it was a very satisfying dish.
