Carlitos

18 Dec

Corn, black beans, tomatoes and cilantro are the makings of a tasty salsa that is served at Carlitos. Since this was the location of our first date, it will always hold a special place in our hearts. We started with some nachos which were quite good.

There is something about a little Mexican flag sitting in your food that makes it that much more festive. I was going to get the shrimp tacos but the waiter informed me that they are breaded and have flour tortilla strips. Instead of getting something and making alterations to it, I decided to just get the steak tacos. They are served on fresh corn tortillas.

Between the nachos and these tacos, I was only able to finish about half of the dish, but it was really good. If I wasn’t so full, I would have gone next door to try on some clothes at Diani.

Wahso

13 Dec

For our last night in Utah, we decided to walk around Park City and then get dinner on Historic Main Street. We ended up going to Wahso – An Asian Grille. While my husband and father-in-law were served wontons with a dipping sauce, the waiter brought out potato chips and sliced carrots for me along with my own mustard dipping sauce. The sauce was so good. I then ordered the Tokyo Twist Tar Tar as an appetizer.

It included Wagyu Beef, Hamachi Tuna, Osetra Caviar and Sake Crème Fraîche. The waiter let me hold on to that tasty mustard sauce which came in handy since I got more potato chips with my appetizer. For my main course, I got the Coconut Infused Tofu Pad Thai. When I asked if it was prepared with soy sauce, the waiter explained to me how the only soy sauce that they use is gluten-free. I thought that was pretty impressive.

We really had a great time in Utah. With all of the GF options that we found, I will be sure to return as soon as I can fit in my skinny jeans again.

Deer Valley

13 Dec

On the day that we skied Deer Valley, we had lunch at their Snow Park Restaurant in the Snow Park Lodge. There are different stations that you can order food from. While looking at the Hot Specialties Station, I noticed that they had a little symbol which meant that an item was gluten-free. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the very tasty Baked Potato I had. I chose to have it topped with cheese, salsa and sour cream.

Malawi’s Pizza

13 Dec

We had an errand to run in Provo, Utah, and I saw a place called Malawi’s Pizza. I thought I would try my luck and call them to see if they had GF pizza. It turns out they did! We got two pizzas to split. The first was the Santa Fe Pizza which is pictured above. It had lime salsa, chicken, black beans, chilis, onions, peppers, avocado and tomatoes, but we got it without the chicken. The other pizza we got was the Classic Cheese Pizza, which we added garlic to.

I preferred the cheese pizza with the garlic because they did not skimp on the garlic. The GF crust they had was unbelievable. As my husband and I were eating it, we were almost certain I was going to have a reaction because it was that good (no reaction other than being in a food coma ensued). If that wasn’t enough, this place tries to do something good for the world with their business. For every meal that is purchased, they donate a nutritious meal to a child in Malawi, Africa. How great is that? Eating GF pizza just got a whole lot more charitable.

Blue Boar Restaurant

13 Dec

The Blue Boar Restaurant is located in the Blue Boar Inn in Midway. You have to see this place. It has a charming, old European feel to it in a sort of romantic way. The room is furnished with antiques from all over the world. Our waitress even brought me a printed sheet detailing where all of the items came from. Now on to the food. I started with the French Onion Grantinee which they prepared for me without the bread. I love french onion soup and this was no exception. I then had the Blue Boar Salad which the waitress recommended. This consisted of mixed greens, tomatoes and manchego cheese with a white balsamic vinaigrette. I thought it was the perfect amount of dressing and the big shreds of cheese on top certainly were appreciated. For my main, I had the Butternut Squash Risotto.

In it was radicchio, asparagus, manchego cheese and truffle oil. It was very good and it would have been the perfect end to my very filling meal. But then when the waitress was saying that their Creme Brulee was voted best in the state, I decided to continue eating. It was pretty straightforward as far as Creme Brulees go. There were no big surprises, but it was VERY good. The only problem was that I managed to eat so much at dinner that I felt a bit ill at the end of the night. I definitely want to return and eat a more appropriate amount.

Tree Room at Sundance Resort

13 Dec

One of the days we were in Utah, we skied at Sundance Resort which is close to the home we were staying at. During the day, my husband and I had Kind Bars for lunch. When it was time for dinner, we were hungry. We went to the Tree Room at Sundance. First, there was an amuse bouche that was served. Since they couldn’t verify if it was GF, they gave me strawberries with balsamic that were good. I then had the special soup which was a corn soup with some chives and other tasty ingredients that I don’t remember.

This was particularly good, especially since we had been out in the cold all day. For my main dish, I had the duck. To be honest, I don’t think I have ever ordered duck before in my life. I just saw that it was served with risotto which sounded really appealing that night.

This was served with butternut squash, pecan risotto, brussels sprouts, cranberry and a molasses glaze. Consider me a duck fan.

Tarahumara

13 Dec

You would think that after eating an entire pizza, I would be full for the day. Clearly, you do not know me well. For dinner on our first night in Utah, we went to Tarahumara. I had the shrimp tacos with corn tortillas. These were awesome. They came with a generous side of rice and beans. One of the best features of this restaurant is their salsa bar. It features over 20 made-fresh-daily salsas. Yum.

Cafe Galleria

13 Dec

For the past five days, we were in Utah skiing which is why things have been a little quiet here. Within those days, we found some gluten-free friendly places that were great. On the day we got in, we went to lunch at Cafe Galleria in Midway, Utah. I had the Goat Cheese with Roasted Peppers GF Pizza. It included goat cheese, roasted bell peppers, mozzarella, caramelized onions, fresh tomatoes and oregano. This pizza was really good. Between the tasty toppings and the crust which was a little meatier than the typical GF crust, I ended up eating the whole thing. So much for self control.

Via Maestra 42

7 Dec

Tonight we were up in the San Roque area so we decided to try Via Maestra 42. This is one of those places that you pass a million times. I am so happy that we finally stepped inside. It is a cozy, neighborhoodish restaurant. I started with the Insalata di Franco. It included organic greens, freh mozzarella, tomatoes, grilled zucchini and grilled eggplant. I really liked this salad. I then had GLUTEN-FREE PASTA. At this point, I will be surprised if a place I go to does NOT have GF pasta.  The waitress explained that it was a $5.00 charge for the GF pasta. I said that was fine, and ordered the pasta with shrimp, cherry tomatoes and arugula.

The sauce was very light. I asked for some red pepper flakes to put some kick in it. It was a good pasta dish if don’t want anything too heavy. So then comes the funny part. As we paid, the waitress brought a wrapped up box of gluten-free pasta from Italy. She explained that since I paid the $5.00 for the pasta, I might as well get what is left of it so that I can cook the rest at home. How nice is that? I definitely want to return and try their Bolognese… and their pesto… and their Pomodoro… and their gelato that is flown in from Italy.

Madison Square Garden

6 Dec

I know it is pretty small but can you see that? That is the menu for gluten-free options at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It hasn’t opened yet, as MSG is going through tons of renovations right now, but going to see the New York Rangers play just got a whole lot tastier!
