We had to meet with someone on Coast Village Road today, so we went to Los Arroyos afterwards for lunch. I had the Rajas con Queso. It includes two corn tortillas with grilled pasilla chiles and onions with monterey jack and queso fresco cheese melted on top. You then have the option of a side of caesar salad or rice and beans. I topped mine with the chipotle salsa they have which is quite good. I would just be very careful describing what you can and can’t have to your waiter. Our particular waitress didn’t seem as on top of things as I would want her to be. However, I have had the dish before so I knew what I could and couldn’t have.

While this is a dedicated gluten-free restaurant, I still made sure to ask questions and I am glad that I did. The milk options for my chai latte were whole milk, cashew milk and oat milk. When I asked about the oat milk that they use, I learned that they use @minorfigures which is not a certified gluten-free oat milk. If you are GF by choice, no big deal. But if you have celiac, you may want to hold off. I always recommend reading posts by @gfwatchdog for a scientific, unbiased look at whether foods are GF or not and then to make decisions based off of what you are comfortable with. I ended up having my chai with whole milk to be safe. I also had the egg and avocado smorgas.
The @sanysidroranch is such a beautiful property that having a meal @stonehousesanysidroranch feels like a mini-vacation. We had breakfast there this morning where I enjoyed the smoked salmon plate with gluten-free toast. They completely understood that the GF bread couldn’t be warmed in the same toaster as regular bread. Everything was delicious and the service was top notch!
We’ve made it to the weekend! Treat yourself to warmed coffee cake from @lilacpatisserie and enjoy the sunshine!
Just a block from @thegarden is @friedmansnyc - a super GF friendly restaurant with multiple locations throughout the city. We had a snack there before the @nyrangers game. One of the original owners of Friedman’s has celiac (she went on to co-found @feelgoodfoods ) and so nearly the whole menu can be made gluten-free. They have dedicated fryers and everyone that works there is knowledgeable about ingredients and preparation. I had the crispy rice tuna and the spinach artichoke dip, both of which were GF as is.
While in NYC, I brought my kids to their first @nyrangers game @thegarden . I was super excited to stop by the entirely GF “Gluten-Free Garden” concessions stand in section 112. They have GF game day favorites like hot dogs, pizza and chicken fingers. I opted for a hot dog which was served on a GF Hilltop Hearth hot dog bun.
One of my favorite meals this time to NYC was @badromannyc in Columbus Circle. The food and drinks were great, all enhanced by the fun ambiance and attention to details. I started with the Cavolo Nero Tricolore salad which was GF as is. They offer house-made gluten-free pasta to substitute in on their pasta dishes. It is made using @cup4cup flour. I ordered the Rock Shrimp Chitarra with the GF pasta after confirming it could be made in a clean pot and with clean tools. For dessert, I ordered the lemon cheesecake which can be made gluten-free by omitting the Graham cracker crumbs. When it was served, it appeared to be two lemons. These lemons were actually hollow white chocolate “lemons” filled with the tasty cheesecake. Everything went great with my cocktail- the tequila granita- complete with habanero shaved ice. I’m definitely looking forward to returning on future visits as this was quite the scene.
I was waiting for you to go to Los A’s – –
Aren’t most things gluten free there? Have you ever had any issues?
I have eaten there once where there were croutons in the salad, so there were fears of cross contamination. I just make sure to explain that the salad needs to be prepared in a fresh bowl, etc.
I LOVE that dish!
