I had the day off today so we drove into Los Olivos for lunch at the Los Olivos Cafe. I had a Caesar Salad without croutons and with grilled chicken. We also ordered the Roasted Local Vegetables which was supposed to include roasted garlic, fresh mozzarella and tapenade, but for some reason, ours didn’t have the mozzarella. This made us sad. After lunch, we went to Quicksilver Ranch in-between Solvang and Ballard. Miniature horses are quite funny looking. I highly recommend this place if you have kids or if you just want to laugh.

Brewhouse and Dessert
15 Nov
We decided to return to our old neighborhood and go to Brewhouse tonight. It was pretty dark in there, so no food pictures came out. I started with the Fire Roasted Artichoke which had an awesome grill taste to it. I then had the Salmon Salad which had two pan seared pieces of salmon on Mixed Greens with Tomato, Red Onion, Capers, Feta Cheese and Champagne Vinaigrette. The pieces of salmon were a smidge overcooked, but overall it was a good salad. Make sure to request it without the bread. I noticed on the menu that they had a “Tanka Dog” on the menu that mentioned that it was gluten free. I asked the waitress about it and she said the actual hot dog was gluten free but that it wasn’t on a GF bun which pretty much defeated the purpose of it for those with allergies. Seemed silly to me. After dinner, we headed to Yogurtland.
On each of the flavors, they mention any specific health tidbits including whether or not the self-serve flavor is gluten-free! How cool is that?

Fresco Take-Out
9 Nov
The hubs had a work call tonight so we decided to get some take-out from Fresco. I called to see if their soup of the day was GF and it was! Soup and salad sounded mighty fine to me, so I got the caesar salad and the potato leak soup. The salad was smothered with cheese which is just the way I like it. The soup looked pretty unappetizing as depicted below.

However, I love potato and leek soup and this was no exception. It was the perfect thing for a cold night!

Arts and Letters Cafe
31 Oct
Today I had the day off, and it was the perfect day to take the pup for a walk. After scaring her sufficiently with all of the costumed-clad kids on State Street, I had worked up an appetite. The front patio at Arts and Letters Cafe allows dogs so I decided to get a salad there for lunch. Pictured above is the Tyler salad without the blue cheese. This salad was fantastic and large enough to eat on its own. It consisted of Jidori chicken, Roots Farm romaine, house made bacon, red onion, avocado, tomato and red wine vinaigrette. YUM.

Natural Cafe – Goleta
25 Oct

After stopping at Alpha Thrift Store in Goleta to pick up items for our Halloween costumes, my husband and I decided to go to Natural Cafe which we have always liked. We started with the hummus appetizer with the pita placed on a separate plate. For some reason, the hummus tasted a little like tuna fish to both of us which was a turn off. We have had it downtown before and enjoyed it, so maybe it was this particular batch. I ordered the Natural Caesar Salad without the croutons (I forgot to take a picture). It was really tasty. A quick note though… the tahini dressing which I used to eat years ago apparently has soy sauce in it so avoid this dressing if you are going the salad route.

Sojourner Cafe
20 SepWhile perusing the menu at Sojourner Cafe at lunch, I saw that they had gluten-free pasta available on one of their items of the day! It really seems like local places are starting to cater more to those with the GF diet which makes me very happy. I ended up having the coconut curry butternut squash soup along with a caesar salad without croutons. I will definitely keep an eye on the special menu though in case another GF pasta shows up!
I also have to give a little shout out to one of my favorite people in Santa Barbara who just happens to also have Celiac Disease. She and her husband just had their first baby this morning. Congratulations!
