Last week, we went out to dinner with some good friends. We decided to try Smithy as we hadn’t been there since it had transitioned from Somerset. I just love their outdoor patio. It feels like such a beautiful, serene nook of Santa Barbara. You easily forget that you are steps from State Street. I started things off with a bang when I ordered their “Ortega Undead II: The Resurrection” to drink. It was a yummy, spicy tequila concoction. I was pleased that our waiter was aware of which dishes were not gluten-free due to cross contamination (our table shared the brussels sprouts and the crispy papas which were not GF). I started with the Grilled Corn. It was served with zucchini, swiss chard, green harissa and queso fresco. Although the dish was simple, the ingredients were so fresh that I found myself wanting to order another one of these. For my main dish, I was tempted by the fact that they had homemade gluten-free pasta available. However, I went with the scallops.
These were served with an english pea risotto, asparagus and sugar snaps. Once again, the combination of fresh ingredients and a great execution made me incredibly satisfied with my choice. We skipped dessert, but I was almost enticed by their GF chocolate cake that was being served that evening. To be honest, I didn’t find a huge difference between Somerset and Smithy. Regardless, we will definitely be returning both for the food and the ambiance.

I ordered the Macho Salad. To make it gluten-free, just request it to be made without the croutons and to be tossed in a clean bowl and with clean tools. The chicken and goat cheese were particularly delicious in this salad.
Guys… @duocatering is back to offering their dinner-to-go and it is still as gluten-free friendly and delicious as it used to be! I picked up the home style veggie chili which had a lot of heat to it. Also, it came with GF CORNBREAD! They use @cup4cup flour which is the gold standard of GF flours. My kiddos had their GF chicken strips which were fried in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. These were fantastic as well and went great with their homemade BBQ sauce and ranch. We also had their winter green salad and their GF chocolate chip cookies for dessert. They used @twentyfourblackbirds chocolate for the cookies which worked out great as they are a nut and sesame-free company! Keep an eye out for updates on Duo’s website as their offerings change each week.
Dinner tonight was a rice noodle stir fry recipe from @foodiewithfam - I omitted the peanuts and sesame oil to make it safe for my kiddo. This turned out delicious. I used garlic chili crunch oil that I found @erewhonmarket in Calabasas which gave it the perfect amount of heat.
This week, I had a lunch date with my 5-year old. We decided to go to @brophys_sb so that we could check out the boats. I had the shrimp scampi with coleslaw and salad. The dish usually has some flour to thicken the sauce, so our server made sure that it would be prepared without the flour and on a clean surface and with clean tools. Their fryer is off limits so don’t eat the fries if you have celiac!
Did you guys know that there are gluten-free biscuits @helenaavenuebakery in the Funk Zone? If you did, shame on you for not telling me sooner! Their biscuits are made in the same facility as lots of items with gluten so there is definitely a risk of cross-contamination. However, they use clean tools and surfaces to make them. Additionally, they keep them in the back away from the the gluten-filled items in the display case. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with the GF biscuit instead of the brioche. The items in the sandwich are typically made on a shared flattop, so I asked them to make mine in a clean pan instead and with clean tools. I was surprised at how light and tasty the biscuit was- they use a blend of rice and tapioca flours. Clearly the birds know how delicious the food there is as they were pretty aggressive on the patio as we were trying to enjoy our meal!
Today’s lunch was the Northwest salad from @shopbrunch . I confirmed that all of the components of the salad were made on clean surfaces and with clean tools. Additionally, I made sure to get there early before the Santa Barbara High School lunch rush so that they could take more time and care to keep my order truly GF.
This food always looks SO GOOD – hurry up and post something new!
