Get a good look at that deliciousness. When I hear “Chicago”, I think deep dish pizza. Then I remember that as a Celiac, it is unlikely that I will get a taste of that goodness. We visited Lou Malnati’s while in Chicago, and saw that they have a gluten-free option! Instead of a flour based crust, they use sausage! I really enjoyed the bulk of the pizza with the thin layer of sausage and then heaps of cheese and sauce. The edges were a little too much for me though with tons of sausage.

I picked up the home style veggie chili which had a lot of heat to it. Also, it came with GF CORNBREAD! They use @cup4cup flour which is the gold standard of GF flours. My kiddos had their GF chicken strips which were fried in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. These were fantastic as well and went great with their homemade BBQ sauce and ranch. We also had their winter green salad and their GF chocolate chip cookies for dessert. They used @twentyfourblackbirds chocolate for the cookies which worked out great as they are a nut and sesame-free company! Keep an eye out for updates on Duo’s website as their offerings change each week.
Dinner tonight was a rice noodle stir fry recipe from @foodiewithfam - I omitted the peanuts and sesame oil to make it safe for my kiddo. This turned out delicious. I used garlic chili crunch oil that I found @erewhonmarket in Calabasas which gave it the perfect amount of heat.
This week, I had a lunch date with my 5-year old. We decided to go to @brophys_sb so that we could check out the boats. I had the shrimp scampi with coleslaw and salad. The dish usually has some flour to thicken the sauce, so our server made sure that it would be prepared without the flour and on a clean surface and with clean tools. Their fryer is off limits so don’t eat the fries if you have celiac!
Did you guys know that there are gluten-free biscuits @helenaavenuebakery in the Funk Zone? If you did, shame on you for not telling me sooner! Their biscuits are made in the same facility as lots of items with gluten so there is definitely a risk of cross-contamination. However, they use clean tools and surfaces to make them. Additionally, they keep them in the back away from the the gluten-filled items in the display case. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with the GF biscuit instead of the brioche. The items in the sandwich are typically made on a shared flattop, so I asked them to make mine in a clean pan instead and with clean tools. I was surprised at how light and tasty the biscuit was- they use a blend of rice and tapioca flours. Clearly the birds know how delicious the food there is as they were pretty aggressive on the patio as we were trying to enjoy our meal!
Today’s lunch was the Northwest salad from @shopbrunch . I confirmed that all of the components of the salad were made on clean surfaces and with clean tools. Additionally, I made sure to get there early before the Santa Barbara High School lunch rush so that they could take more time and care to keep my order truly GF.
We had a delicious meal @thedutchessojai last night. This Burmese restaurant has “gf” marked on their menu, but after talking to our server, I learned that their fryer is not dedicated GF. The server went ahead and marked my menu to show what would be safe for someone with celiac. As the Burmese nut mix is prepared in Myanmar (formerly Burma), they couldn’t guarantee that there wasn’t cross contamination and so some dishes could be made safe just by omitting the nuts.
Ummm, and you can order this to be delivered to your home. You may have just changed my life.
It was pretty awesome. Get ready for a sausage fest.
Leaving a random comment, as I found this in a google search!
I work for a Lou Malnati’s store, and you may be happy to know that Lou Malnati’s just added a truly gluten-free pizza this week! It only comes in a 9-inch thin crust, however. Happy eating. 🙂
Oh my goodness… well I guess that gives me a reason to get back to Chicago sooner than later!
Chicago’s Pizza in Chicago now has true deep dish pizza that’s gluten-free! They ship too! I just did a blog post on it.
Andrea… that pizza looks great! Were they good about cross contamination?
They are very good about using dedicated equipment to prepare and bake the crust. I did not get sick but I do not have Celiac. It certainly was incredible and tasted like how I remember deep dish tasting prior to going gluten-free.
